What is zero air?
Zero air is purified air from which hydrocarbons and other impurities have been removed to very low levels, typically below 0.1 ppm total hydrocarbons for analytical use. It's called "zero" because it gives a zero reading on the instrument, so it can be used as a clean baseline.
Who uses zero air?
- Gas chromatography (GC-FID): the flame ionisation detector needs clean air along with hydrogen to burn. Impure air shows up as noise and drift.
- Calibration of gas analysers: zeroing pollution monitors, stack emission analysers and gas detectors.
- Pharma, food-testing and college laboratories running GC and other instruments.
Compressed air cylinders
We also supply compressed air cylinders for industrial and lab use where a compressor isn't available or practical. Please note that zero air and industrial compressed air are not breathing air for diving or breathing apparatus.

Questions about zero air
What purity of zero air do I need for GC-FID?
Check your instrument or method specification. Most FID methods ask for hydrocarbon-free air, typically below 0.1 ppm total hydrocarbons. Share the requirement with us and we'll confirm the matching grade.
Can I use ordinary compressed air instead of zero air?
For sensitive analysis, no. Ordinary compressed air can carry oil and hydrocarbons that cause baseline noise and false peaks. Use zero air for analytical work.
