Carbon dioxide gas for welding and beverages
Carbon dioxide, usually just called CO₂ gas, is stored in cylinders as a liquid under pressure and comes out as a gas. It's one of the most widely used gases in small industry: welders use it to shield MIG welds on mild steel, and soda and cool-drink shops use it for the fizz.

CO₂ safety
- CO₂ is heavier than air and collects in basements, pits, cellars and cold rooms. In high concentration it causes headaches, dizziness and suffocation. Keep storage areas ventilated.
- Keep CO₂ cylinders upright so liquid does not enter the regulator.
- At high welding flow rates, CO₂ regulators can freeze. Welders commonly use a heated CO₂ regulator for continuous work.
- Don't store cylinders in direct sun or near heat. Pressure rises sharply with temperature.

Is CO₂ welding the same as MIG welding?
