Medical oxygen for hospitals and homes

Medical oxygen is a medicine. It's produced, filled and handled for patient use and supplied in cylinders marked for medical use. Parameswara Traders has supplied medical oxygen (MO2) in Kurnool since 1992, to hospitals, nursing homes and clinics, and to families caring for patients at home.

Cylinder sizes: B-type (10 L) and jumbo (46.7 L)

• B-type cylinder (10 litres water capacity): holds about 1,500 litres of oxygen. It's light and easy to move, which makes it popular for home use, ambulances and clinics.
• Jumbo cylinder (46.7 litres water capacity): holds about 7,000 litres of oxygen. Used by hospitals and nursing homes, and at home when a patient needs oxygen for many hours a day.

How long does a medical oxygen cylinder last?

Divide the amount of gas in the cylinder (in litres) by the flow rate your doctor has set (litres per minute). For example, a B-type cylinder holding about 1,500 litres at 2 litres per minute lasts roughly 750 minutes, about 12 hours. A jumbo cylinder holding about 7,000 litres at the same flow lasts over two days. Always keep a spare cylinder, or order a refill, before the gauge gets low.

Oxygen safety at home

• No smoking, no flames: keep the cylinder well away (at least 2 metres) from gas stoves, diyas, agarbattis, heaters and anyone smoking.
• Don't use oil-based creams or petroleum jelly on the face or nose while on oxygen. Use water-based products.
• Keep the cylinder upright and secured in a ventilated room, away from sunlight.
• Never use industrial oxygen or a plain black cylinder for a patient.
• Close the cylinder valve when oxygen is not being used.
