Helium cylinders in India are painted brown. Balloon-grade and high-purity lab helium are different grades, so tell us your use.
What helium is used for
Helium is a very light, inert gas. It's lighter than air, which is why it floats balloons, and it doesn't burn or react, which makes it safe for decorations and useful in labs and industry.
- Balloons and event decorations for weddings, birthdays, shop openings and functions.
- Leak testing of refrigeration, vacuum and pressure systems. Helium's tiny atoms find leaks other gases miss.
- Laboratories: carrier gas for gas chromatography and other instruments (high-purity grade).
- Welding: added to argon for TIG welding of thick aluminium and copper, where extra heat is needed.

Helium safety
- Never inhale helium from a cylinder or balloon. Breathing it pushes oxygen out of your lungs and can cause fainting or worse.
- Use a proper balloon-filling regulator and keep children away from the cylinder.
- Keep cylinders upright, secured and out of direct sun.
Questions about helium gas
How many balloons can one helium cylinder fill?
It depends on the cylinder size and balloon size. Tell us how many balloons and what size (for example 10-inch or 12-inch latex) and we'll suggest the right cylinder.
Can I use helium for a gas chromatograph?
Yes, but GC work needs high-purity helium. Tell us your instrument's requirement so we supply the correct grade.
